It’s been quite a summer of surprises so far.

Whether we are thinking of the World Cup, Wimbledon, Westminster or even the weather, things have not generally worked out as most would have predicted.

It’s probably fair to say that England exceeded most people’s expectations, even managing to successfully navigate a penalty shootout. All in all, quite a good showing.

At Wimbledon, past champions fell short and we saw some of the longest matches on record and all this as the heat wave was just beginning to become established.

As I write, although there is the occasional promise of a shower, there appears to be no sign of an end to the heat wave.

And, of course, in the midst of all this, as negotiations for Brexit continue, we have seen key figures from the government resigning.

It’s been quite an eventful summer so far, with plenty to entertain us.

Of course, life often is more exciting when things don’t work out quite as predicted.

On the other hand, in the past few weeks, we have also seen and heard of tragedies around the world. Here, the unexpected has brought great uncertainty, difficulty and grief.

In life, which is so often marked by unexpected events, it is so reassuring to know that in Jesus we can know God’s presence with us in everything we encounter.

As we face our own daily joys and struggles, we can find consolation in God’s word:
“Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you.  He will not leave you or forsake you.”
Deuteronomy 31 v 6 (ESV)
